Walkers are reptilian creatures that walk on two feet and carry a staff. The Walkers do not die. Instead, when their cycle is complete they turn to ashes. When a new cycle starts, they are reborn from the ashes. Until that they are reborn, their souls are carried by the Soul Guardian they are bonded too. When they are reborn, they look completely different, but their memories and personality are the same. The only thing about their appearance that stays the same is their staff, which never changes. It is how they recognize each other, and how they get their name.
